Should you be looking for certified training from Microsoft, it stands to reason you’ll want training companies to supply a wide selection of the finest training programs available today. It’s advisable to discuss all the different permutations with somebody who has knowledge of the commercial needs of the market, and has the ability to guide you towards the more likely roles to suit your personality. After settling on your career path, you must find an appropriate course matched to your ability level and skill set. Your study program should be second to none.
Students often end up having issues because of a single courseware aspect which is often not even considered: The breakdown of the course materials before being couriered to your address. Most companies will sell you a program spread over 1-3 years, and deliver each piece one-by-one as you get to the end of each exam. Sounds reasonable? Well consider these facts: What if you don’t finish every single exam? What if you don’t find their order of learning is ideal for you? Through no fault of your own, you mightn’t complete everything fast enough and not receive all the modules you’ve paid for.
The very best situation would see you getting every piece of your study pack couriered to your home before you even start; the entire package! This way, nothing can happen down the line which could affect your capability of finishing.
At the top of your shopping list for a training program should be full 24×7 support through dedicated instructors and mentors. Too many companies only seem to want to help while they’re in the office (9am till 6pm, Monday till Friday usually) and nothing at the weekends. Find a good quality service where you can access help at any time of the day or night (even 1am on Sunday morning!) You want direct access to tutors, and not a call-centre that will take messages so you’re consistently being held in a queue for a call-back when it’s convenient for them.
We recommend looking for providers that incorporate three or four individual support centres active in different time-zones. All of them should be combined to give a single entry point and 24 hours-a-day access, when it suits you, with no fuss. Never make the mistake of compromise where support is concerned. Most students that fall by the wayside, are in that situation because of support (or the lack of).
A capable and professional advisor (in direct contrast to a salesman) will cover in some detail your current situation. This is paramount to working out the starting point for your education. If you have a strong background, or perhaps a bit of live experience (maybe some existing accreditation?) then obviously your starting point will be different from a trainee who has no experience. Commencing with a user skills module first may be the ideal way to get up and running on your IT studies, depending on your skill level at the moment.
If you’re like many of the students we talk to then you probably enjoy fairly practical work – the ‘hands-on’ personality type. Usually, the unfortunate chore of reading reference guides is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but it’s not really your thing. So look for on-screen interactive learning packages if you’d really rather not use books. If we can utilise all of our senses into our learning, then we often see hugely increased memory retention as a result.
Learning is now available via DVD-ROM discs, where your computer becomes the centre of your learning. Video streaming means you can sit back and watch the teachers showing you precisely how to perform the required skill, and then have a go at it yourself – via the interactive virtual lab’s. Any company that you’re considering should willingly take you through some simple examples of the type of training materials they provide. You’re looking for evidence of tutorial videos and demonstrations and many interactive sections.
You’ll find that many companies will only provide just online versions of their training packages; sometimes you can get away with this – but, think what will happen if internet access is lost or you get intermittent problems and speed issues. It’s preferable to have actual CD or DVD ROMs which will not have these problems.
