From film to fantasy, we are intent to watch. Why? What is it that we cherish about sitting amongst one hundred other strangers, in the dark, watching theatrical drama play out on a sixty-foot screen? What is it about the experience, and the medium, that captivates us to the extent we allow other human beings, pretending to be other human beings, shanghai our mental and emotional space?

To be sure, we are visual creatures with more than a penchant for observing. Perhaps it is tied into our survival apparatus, but I do not wish to digress into a biological or anthropological tract here. Needless to say, we are voyeurs par excellence. So, it really should come as no surprise that we will watch practically anything presented to us. But this begs the perennial question: why?

It may be the case that the question is completely rhetorical. Why, indeed. WE watch, perhaps, because we have been assured, via the Aristotelian structure of drama. That is, we expect some kind of reward as indeed a reward has been woven into this thing called a narrative. It may be the case, as some filmmakers and writers have attested, that there is no inherent meaning in the subject matter we watch or absorb. Petronius, Tarkovsky, Camus, and Sartre come to mind.

If we have yet to understand the basic mechanisms of why we watch films, how can we hope to understand why we wish to be watched in those films? This gray area is being exploited, for lack of a better word, by companies like Yoostar, who have made it possible now to replace Humphrey Bogart and John Belushi and Harrison Ford in the films that made them famous.

Angkor Wat – Steeped In History

The ancestry of Cambodia is traced back to the legendary Indian Kaundinya and Soma, a Khmer princess, and this lineage was called Somavamsa. It was in the 7th century that Kambu and Mera, another legendary couple established a different lineage, the Suryavamsa. Amidst several warring kings, King Jayavarman II declared himself a universal ruler in 802.

The Khmer empire in those days covered much more than Cambodia of today, and included Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Burma and other places. The region of the Empire later came to be known as Angkor, with hundreds of beautiful temples. These enchanting structures were once part of a larger social structure that consisted of wooden houses, palaces and other places.

The Angkor Wat temple was built by Suryavarman II, the Khmer Emperor, and it was initially a Hindu temple. When the Khmer empire was thriving, many temples and palaces were built. The temple architecture is such that it is talked about as the best and most impressive human creations even to this day.

Lord Vishnu is the main deity; however, the sculptures on the temple also pay homage to several Vedic gods and goddesses including Lord Siva. The Angkor Wat temple is said to have served as an observatory where the rising sun was aligned on the equinox and solstice days with the entrance to the West of the temple, and numerous sighting lines were identified to be able to observe the rising of the sun and moon seasonally.

The Horrors Of The Khmer Rouge

Khmer Rouge was the communist party that ruled Cambodia after overthrowing the Cambodian government. It is a brutal, disastrous rule that changed the country forever and shocked the world.

The Khmer Rouge had thousands of followers and an insurgency had begun against the government in the year’70. With the aid of the Viet Cong troops and the North Vietnamese, the Khmer Rouge gained control over a large part of Cambodia. It grew very popular in a short time and increased from 3,000 to 30,000 in strength in just three years, from’70 to’73, sending back the Viet Cong troops and Vietnamese whose help was no longer needed.

Under the leadership of Pol Pot, in’75, “Democratic Kampuchea” came into existence after the government was brought down. Everything changed for the Cambodian people and all the peace and quiet vanished overnight, and the monstrous rule of the Khmer Rouge took over. They started demolishing everything that was held dear by the people of Cambodia. They evacuated full cities, destroyed property, closed factories and schools and made thousands of workers turn to farming. The worst part was the assassinations of millions of people. Later it was revealed that the death toll was more than 2 million people.

In’79, because of a strained relationship, the Vietnamese troops invaded and helped the local factions in getting rid of the Khmer Rouge government. Unfazed by this, the Khmer Rouge continued its activities near the Thai border, with its 30,000 strong army. The United Nations recognized it as the official government of Cambodia.

This government formed a coalition in’82, with Norodom Sihanouk, the former premier and the non-Communist leader, Son Sann. Pol Pot gave up his leadership for Khieu Samphan, but it was said to Pol Pot who continued to call the shots. On the request of the different factions in Cambodia, who signed a treaty, the United Nations assumed administration of the government in’91 and help elections in’92. Around that time, the Khmer Rouge withdrew itself from the peace process did not accept the results of the elections which led to the formation of a coalition government in Cambodia, and began fighting again.

Internal disputes led the Khmer Rouge to disintegrate in’97, leading to the imprisonment of Pol Pot. He died soon after in’98, bringing to a close what was the worst reign of modern times. By’99, all the other members of the Khmer Rouge were defected, captured or surrendered.

Not many scholars believed the reports of mass killings in Cambodia before’79; however, when the Khmer Rouge was overtaken by the Vietnamese, the extent of the disaster was clear to all.

A chill runs down the spine of every Cambodian when they think back on the Khmer Rouge. It shocked the world with the atrocities that were considered to be the worst ever the world had to face. The wounds of the rule remain raw even today, as they changed the lives of the population of Cambodia, like nothing else has before.

Manhattan’s Most Exciting Areas

There are so many great things about Manhattan. From the liveliness to the convenience and the outright beauty of the city itself, residents and travelers alike fall in love with New York.

Each neighborhood has its own special feel to it, making things really great for those who have a wide variety of interests.

Every neighborhood is truly unique, and the restaurants, stores, bars, and other things that come with a neighborhood really vary depending on where you are. It’s almost as if each one is its own city within a city.

Having spent a lot of time around Manhattan, I’d like to offer you some advice if you’re looking to travel here. Hopefully you’ll enjoy these neighborhoods as much as I do.

I’d like to open this article up with a mention of the East Village, probably my favorite neighborhood of them all. Having spent some time living there, I’ve never fallen out of love with this great neighborhood.

Catered to a younger crowd (think 20s and 30s), there are so many different styles of food, bars, lounges, and clothing shopping, all immersed in one area no bigger than a square mile at most. The East Village morphs into the Lower East Side as you go down, and the areas are very similar.

The West Village is very similar, yet it’s a bit more mature. So many small cafes and boutique clothing retailers fill some very scenic tree lined blocks, making for a beautiful setting and a very lively neighborhood.

Others may not be as into the bar scene and may prefer more traditional settings. The Upper West side of Manhattan offers just this. Between many museums, Central Park, and some historical landmarks, this is a great destination for tourists.

As you can see, there’s so much to do in this great city. What’s scary is that I’ve only mentioned a few of the many wonderful places to choose from.
