How To Spot The Top MLM/Network Marketing Lies

I promise to the the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I’m am not a Network Marketing success story. I’m not living on Easy Street, cashing fat residual checks.

…yet. ;-)

I’m an active participant in a networking business and I think it’s the greatest business opportunity in the world today. I will achieve financial independence through MLM.

It’s not my dream to live like J.R. in Dallas. Multi-million dollar mansions and Rolls-Royces don’t interest me. I have better things to do with my life. My business will allow me to money and time to enjoy my friends and hobbies, contribute to worthwhile causes, and send my kids to college.

I’ve been involved in MLM on and off for thirty years. I’ve had some success and some failures. One of things that puzzles me is that so many recruiters represent their business opportunity as if EVERYONE wants be a mega-millionaire. I think that’s stupid. (Don’t get me wrong. I LIKE material goods. I LIKE “toys”. But it doesn’t define who I AM.)

I believe that most people who want to enjoy a healthy residual income from MLM are far less money motivated than is commonly thought. It would be wise for those who are serious about building an MLM business to consider the possibility that

…most people are content to make an extra $1,000-$5,000 per month because they can’t imagine making $10,000 to $50,000 per month.

…most people are not type-A personalities who have boundless energy and enthusiasm about changing their lives. They have jobs, kids, and other concerns. They can only take on new tasks a little at a time.

…78% of all network marketers have never run a business before. The responsibilities of bookkeeping and self-motivation can be intimidating.

I recently attended an opportunity meeting I’ll never forget. The presenter was a schmaltzy, oily, snake of a guy who was intent on telling the attendees how easy it is to make $60,000 per month in his business. (I bet he’s never made over $60,000 per YEAR!) He did all the same things he saw his sponsor do–drawing circles, smiling real big, using all the right words–and he had some of these poor folks halfway convinced they could do the same thing. (The rest of them were thinking about what they were going to have for dinner and who was going to play in the SuperBowl.)

I knew how things would turn out. A few, maybe 10% of them sign up. 90% of them would lose money and drop out in 6 months because they were spending more than they were making. the rest of the audience would wonder why their friend had gotten involved in this obvious scam. This happens every night of the week. Stop by any Holiday Inn.

Just ONCE, I’d like to hear someone tell the truth at a recruiting meeting. I’d love to hear the speaker say,

“you’re not going to make much money for three to six months. whatever money you make, you’re going to reinvest back into your business. It will be work hard and you’ll have to do things that are outside of your comfort zone. You can take it at your own pace and I’ll be here help you whenever you need me. If you follow my proven plan, you can create a full-time income in six to eighteen months and you won’t have to worry about money again.”

That’s what I’d tell you if you were interested in my business-building system.

Network building requires a focused commitment over a long period of time. The truth is that there are a few opportunities where you can make some money right away, but they never last more than a few months. If building a business was easy, everyone would do it.

A drawback of MLM businesses is that they cost very little to join. Once you’ve heard the extravagant claims of so-called top earners, you might be tempted to gamble a few bucks to “see if it works out. My advice is…DON’T. Send the money to Haiti or give it to your church instead. Find out what you’re getting into BEFORE you sign on the dotted line. You’ll be doing yourself–and your sponsor–a favor.

Network marketing is a tremendous marketing technology. Word of mouth is far more effective than paid advertising. That’s why some MLMs are so successful. If you’re looking at companies to join, make sure they have the training and recruiting systems in place to ensure that you can get through your first few month. Being a business owner isn’t for everyone and you need to know the facts so you can make a wise decision.
